The digital license is part of the baggage brought in by the Digital Age. In the good old days, all we had to try to master was the Copyright Law. We would acquire a book or a journal, post and monitor a "fair-use" photocopy policy, and go on about our activities. With each delivery of digital information, there arrives a separate set of licensing terms with its own private "copyright" terms imposed by contract. In the midst of this we suddenly appreciate how simple life used to be.

This course helps to bring us up to speed in the age of digital licensing. It provides a primer on:

  • what the digital license is intended to accomplish
  • the meaning of its essential terms
  • the nature of the contract process and how it affects Copyright Law and standards.
We will provide you with strategies for developing a license management model for your library, including:

  • developing a team approach to license evaluation and negotiation;
  • a clause-by-clause analysis of an existing license agreement
  • tips for negotiating strategies
  • forms for individual library licensing needs assessment
  • techniques for building a productive relationship with the legal department
