This year we added a new scholarship for paraprofessionals! \u00a0The winner of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/students.htm\" target=\"_blank\">MLGSCA Scholarship for Paraprofessionals in Health Sciences Libraries<\/a> is Sondhaya \u201cSunny\u201d Sritongsook. \u00a0The winners of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/students.htm\" target=\"_blank\">MLGSCA Student Scholarship<\/a> awards are\u00a0Meredith Bloom,\u00a0Stephen Kiyoi and\u00a0Heather R. MacDonald.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1562\" title=\"sunny\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/sunny2.jpg\" alt=\"sunny\" width=\"102\" height=\"144\" \/>Sondhaya \u201cSunny\u201d Sritongsook<\/strong> is our first recipient of the \u201cMLGSCA Scholarship for Paraprofessionals in Health Sciences Libraries\u201d. \u00a0She is currently enrolled at San Jose State University and hopes to graduate May 2011. \u00a0She works in San Diego for Scripps Mercy Hospital Medical Library as a Library Technician. \u00a0At work she contributes to helping fellow citizens, takes comfort in knowing that she\u2019s made someone\u2019s life a little bit easier, \u00a0and uplifted by the idea that the services she provides is promoting better health for someone. \u00a0She stated that this field unites her passion for the health sciences, is a nurturing environment for life long learning, and has a great dedication to public service. One of her reference letters stated \u201cSunny represents the future of our profession\u2026a technically-skilled, service-oriented individual with energy, enthusiasm and a solid work ethic\u201d. \u00a0She is motivated to make her own contribution to the medical library profession and has joined CLA, ALA, SERRA, and student member of MLGSCA.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->Meredith Bloom<\/strong> currently attends UCLA and anticipates receiving her degree in 2011. \u00a0Meredith\u2019s interest in health extends back to her<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1555\" title=\"mere\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/mere.jpg\" alt=\"mere\" width=\"124\" height=\"96\" \/>undergraduate days when her Women\u2019s studies major focused on women&#8217;s health and Dance. Her interest in dance and fitness caused her to focus her science background on anatomy, physiology and kinesiology and eventually become a Pilates instructor and Certified Personal Trainer. \u00a0Her deep commitment to helping individuals dates back years and is evidenced by a long list of volunteer positions. \u00a0She plans on continuing her service to the health of the community by focusing her librarianship skills on Consumer Health information services and health literacy. \u00a0Meredith will be a wonderful addition to our profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1558\" title=\"stephen2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/stephen2.jpg\" alt=\"stephen2\" width=\"89\" height=\"144\" \/>Stephen Kiyo<\/strong>i, 2009-2010 recipient of the MLGSCA student scholarship award, is currently enrolled in the UCLA Department of Information Studies and will graduate with his MLIS degree in June 2010. \u00a0Stephen earned a BA degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and hopes to become a clinical librarian at an academic library with ties to a university medical center. \u00a0Through his classes, his student position at UCLA and his internship at Norris Medical Library at USC, Stephen has become convinced of clinicians need of medical librarians to access and utilize the wealth of current biomedical literature. \u00a0Stephen is a student member of MLGSCA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather R. MacDonald<\/strong> is a student at San Jose State University and a graduate of McGill University with a Masters of Biology and a Bachelor of Biochemistry (with Honors). \u00a0 She<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1566\" title=\"heather\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/heather2.jpg\" alt=\"heather\" width=\"192\" height=\"144\" \/>currently is a resident of Ottawa, Ontario, and has worked as a molecular biologist and research technician at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Alberta. At SJSU she has a 3.957 GPA and plans to use the award during the summer of 2010 when she will graduate in August. \u00a0She completed a library internship at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where she designed and implemented a cultural competence learning guide for health professionals. \u00a0She plans a second internship at the Health Sciences Library at the University of Ottawa.
