{"id":3305,"date":"2011-04-01T08:00:04","date_gmt":"2011-04-01T15:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=3305"},"modified":"2011-04-14T15:25:48","modified_gmt":"2011-04-14T22:25:48","slug":"2011-mlgsca-scholarship-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=3305","title":{"rendered":"2011 MLGSCA Scholarship Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Submitted by Laura Stubblefield, Chair, MLGSCA Awards Committee and Carol Ann Atwood, Medical Librarian, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year we had many outstanding applications for the MLGSCA Scholarship and the Awards Committee is proud to introduce our three recipients that will receive $1000 toward their advanced degree.\u00a0 They will be recognized at the MLGSCA Business meeting on April 8, 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/PBenefiel.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3338\" title=\"PBenefiel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/PBenefiel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a> <strong>Patricia Benefiel<\/strong> expects to complete her degree in Aug. 2011 at SJSU.\u00a0 One class, Medical Library Resources, changed her focus from a public librarian to becoming a medical librarian.\u00a0 Earlier in her career she worked as a research assistant for a behavioral psychiatrist. She searched Index Medicus, did statistical analysis of data, and was learning medical terminology. She took undergraduate science classes and worked as an editor for several scientists.\u00a0 Last fall she interned at a medical college library (San Diego) with Naomi Broering.\u00a0 Pat is intrigued with helping to save lives, assisting physicians to stay current in their field, and helping patients\/consumer who seek critical health information.\u00a0 When asked about medical librarians Pat said \u201cI believe medical librarianship is a noble profession.\u00a0 It offers an opportunity and a personal reward of researching interesting and very essential reference questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/K-Karadjova1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3314\" title=\"K Karadjova\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/K-Karadjova1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>Katia Karadjova<\/strong> plans to complete her MLIS degree May 2011 from SJSU.\u00a0 She has been a permanent scholar most of her life.\u00a0 She has a Master in Physics with a specialization in Optics and Spectroscopy.\u00a0 She also has a background of film and public communications.\u00a0 With the fast paced technological and information age we live in and her background, Katia decided to become a medical librarian.\u00a0 She interned at Parks Medical Library (Long   Beach), familiarized herself with many electronic resources, completed a usage analysis, developed a marketing strategy for the library, and researched recent trends in information-seeking behavior of healthcare professionals.\u00a0 She produced a paper as a result of this research which was accepted for presentation at the annual Medical Library Association (MLA) Conference in Minneapolis, in May 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Navarette.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3414\" title=\"Navarette\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Navarette.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a> <strong>Jamie N.
