As I write this column, my last as 2008-09 President, summer has definitely arrived.\u00c2\u00a0 The weather has turned really hot (and smoggy, in the Inland Empire at least).\u00c2\u00a0 Like many of you, I am in the middle of travels, having just returned from several days in the mountains, then a few more at the shore, and about to leave again for a family trip to Minneapolis.\u00c2\u00a0 The pace is different for me at work, even though we are not an academic institution.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

For MLGSCA, however, summer is far from a slack time.\u00c2\u00a0 On July 1, the new Officers and Committee Chairs assumed their positions.\u00c2\u00a0 The 2009-10 budget is being developed and is scheduled for approval on July 24.\u00c2\u00a0 Committee membership is being fleshed out.\u00c2\u00a0 The Fall CE is already being planned.\u00c2\u00a0 And as the biggest project of all, the January 2010 Joint Meeting is becoming more and more real.\u00c2\u00a0 Developing such a conference is an immense undertaking, for which planning begins more than a year in advance.\u00c2\u00a0 At this point, with the meeting only six months away, sustained effort is underway and will continue throughout the summer and straight through until January.\u00c2\u00a0 We are really fortunate to have an energetic, dedicated, and experienced team of four(!) Co-Chairs for this event \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Ellen Aaronson, Rebecca Birr, Judy Bube, and Kathy Zeblisky \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and a cadre of top notch committee members.\u00c2\u00a0 It is going to be a GREAT meeting, and I hope you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve already made the commitment to attend.<\/p>\n


\nSo, as of July 1, I am Past-President and therefore Chair of the Nominating Committee that will develop the slate of officers for election next spring.\u00c2\u00a0 Although that sounds far away, we all know how quickly the time will pass, and July definitely is not too early to begin thinking along these lines.\u00c2\u00a0 I would love to hear your suggestions, questions, or concerns regarding next year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s slate, and I hope you will take the time to share them with me.<\/p>\n

Once again I offer my thanks to you all for entrusting me with the leadership of this outstanding organization during the past year.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been tremendously rewarding to work with such a fine Advisory Council and to play a role in so many important accomplishments.<\/p>\n
