Fall 2009 MLA Webcast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MLA broadcasted their fall education webcast, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlanet.org\/education\/distance_ed\/mobile\/index.html\">Cut The Cord: Connecting\u00c2\u00a0to our Mobile Users<\/a>,&#8221; on November 18th. There were several site viewings in Southern California and Arizona available to MLGSCA members.<\/p>\n<p>The webcast provided excellent case studies of uses of mobile technologies in both medical libraries and health care settings, included speakers from a variety of libraries, and the\u00c2\u00a0bibliographies\u00c2\u00a0submitted by speakers and videotaped presenters provide additional resources for exploring this emerging field.<\/p>\n<p>Max Anderson (Technology Coordinator, NN\/LM GMR, University of Illinois-Chicago) commenced the webcast with a short history of mobile technology.\u00c2\u00a0 Emily Hurst (Instructional Services Librarian, University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio) and Megan von Isenburg\u00c2\u00a0(Associate Director, Information Services, Medical Center Library, Duke University) discussed projects involving e-Readers and how they are used in clinical settings.\u00c2\u00a0 David Rothman (Manager, Medical Library, Community General Hospital, Syracuse, NY) and Bart Ragon\u00c2\u00a0(Associate Director, Library Technology Services &amp; Development, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia-Charlottesville) compared medical applications on the iTouch,\u00c2\u00a0iPhone and Android\u00c2\u00a0phones.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Bart Ragon\u00c2\u00a0presented four ways of searching MEDLINE from a mobile device: PubMed on Tap; MEDLINE via Unbound Medicine; Pubget Mobile; and, Mobile PubMed.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Brian Briggman\u00c2\u00a0(System Architect, National Library of Medicine) explained how to design\u00c2\u00a0mobile device-combatible websites.\u00c2\u00a0 Max Anderson culminated the webcast by providing government-level funding resources, partnerships and foundations to support initiatives involving mobile devices.\u00c2\u00a0 Peruse the MLA Webcast Participant Manual to learn what other speakers\u00c2\u00a0said about connecting to our mobile users.\u00c2\u00a0 The Participant&#8217;s Manual includes speaking information, webcast slides, and a bibliography of speaker favorites.\u00c2\u00a0 To access the Participant&#8217;s Manual, use username <em>mlaweb<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and password\u00c2\u00a0<em>mlace13<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0on the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlanet.org\/education\/documents\/registered_sites_mt.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mobile Technologies Registered Sites<\/a> webpage.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The webcast brought up many fruitful topics for discussion, and the MLGSCA blog would be a great place to continue these discussions.\u00c2\u00a0What did you find most interesting about the webcast?
