{"id":845,"date":"2009-12-15T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2009-12-15T13:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=845"},"modified":"2010-01-12T19:28:33","modified_gmt":"2010-01-13T00:28:33","slug":"mlgscancnmlg-jm2010-invited-speaker-dr-david-levy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=845","title":{"rendered":"MLGSCA\/NCNMLG JM2010: Invited Speaker, Dr. David Levy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-848\" title=\"Dr. David Levy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/levy.bmp\" alt=\"Dr. David Levy\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/jtmtg2010\/\" target=\"_blank\">2010 Joint Meeting<\/a> will feature CE classes, exhibits, contributed posters and papers, and a variety of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/jtmtg2010\/invited_speakers.htm\" target=\"_blank\">invited speakers<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s invited speakers are Nadine Ellero, Keith Frey, David Rothman, David Levy and Connie Schardt.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. David Levy will speak on Friday, January 29 at 8:30am.\u00c2\u00a0 In his speech titled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No Time to Think\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, David will point out that the whole reason why we spend time streamlining, automating, and speeding up our workflow isn&#8217;t to work more &#8211; it&#8217;s to make time for important things computers can&#8217;t do, like <em>thinking<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 David argues that our fast-paced world doesn&#8217;t allow for time to think deeply, the time when we come up with our best ideas and most important insights.\u00c2\u00a0 Watch David&#8217;s talk at Google last year on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5043696\/david-levy-on-having-no-time-to-think\" target=\"_blank\">Lifehacker<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Dr. Levy is a <a href=\"http:\/\/ischool.uw.edu\/directory\/faculty\/detail.aspx?id=3154#\" target=\"_blank\">professor<\/a> at University of Washington School of Information and also the author of <em>No Time to Think.<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in computer science (1979) and a Diploma in calligraphy and bookbinding from the Roehampton Institute, London (1982).\u00c2\u00a0 For fifteen years (until December 1999), he was a member of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) where his research focused on the nature of documents and on the tools and practices through which they are created and used.\u00c2\u00a0 His current research focuses on information and the quality of life.\u00c2\u00a0 His book, &#8220;Scrolling Forward: Making Sense of Documents in the Digital Age&#8221; has just been published.<\/p>\n<p><em>Posted 12\/15\/09<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2010 Joint Meeting will feature CE classes, exhibits, contributed posters and papers, and a variety of invited speakers.\u00c2\u00a0 This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s invited speakers are Nadine Ellero, Keith Frey, David Rothman, David Levy and Connie Schardt.
