{"id":2812,"date":"2010-12-06T15:40:03","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T22:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=2812"},"modified":"2010-12-06T15:40:30","modified_gmt":"2010-12-06T22:40:30","slug":"best-bytes-maximize-your-effective-uses-of-blogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=2812","title":{"rendered":"Best Bytes: Maximize Your Effective Uses of Blogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Picture2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2843\" title=\"Picture2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Picture2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a>Submitted by <a href=\"email:\/\/jddoyle@email.arizona.edu\" target=\"_self\">Jacque Doyle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are reading this<\/strong>, you have found your way into MLGSCA\u2019s new website, <strong><em>MLGSCA Link<\/em><\/strong>, which is \u201cway\u201d more than a website.\u00a0 The <strong><em>Link <\/em><\/strong>has been created so that you will be able to not only read and learn about the organization, but also contribute to it in real time!\u00a0 We hope that you take advantage of the opportunity to make comments, i.e., complain, question or praise the blog writers who are working to improve communication across our chapter! \u00a0\u00a0To comment, just look just beneath the post title for the link that says \u201cNo Comments\u201d or \u201c# Comment\u201d and click there to add your own thoughts!\u00a0 And when you find articles or blog posts you think your MLG colleagues would enjoy, share them with our blog coordinator, Kathleen Carlson.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you are following at least this blog, perhaps it is time to expand your horizons.<\/p>\n<p>I am <strong>almost <\/strong><em>embarrassed <\/em>to admit that I follow A LOT of blogs!\u00a0 However, I have discovered several ways to be purposeful and efficient as I do that.I follow blogs for a number of reasons:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>**To stay as current as I can and choose to be, in both medical education and librarianship<br \/>\n**To follow trends in my interests and hobbies (gardening and photography), and,<br \/>\n**To view shared photos with family and friends<\/p>\n<p>I \u201cfollow\u201d these blogs using primarily two tools:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en\/googlereader\/tour.html\">Google Reader<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloglines.com\/about\">Bloglines<\/a>.\u00a0 Which you choose to use becomes quite personal. Early this year, it appeared that <em><strong>Bloglines <\/strong><\/em>was going away, so I started looking around for alternatives, and I began to use Google Reader.\u00a0 Since Bloglines was saved, I now use both depending on my need.<\/p>\n<p>One way to comparison shop is to examine their starting pages:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2815\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/jddgooglereader1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2815\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2815 \" title=\"JDsGoogleReader\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/jddgooglereader1.png\" alt=\"JDsGoogleReader\" width=\"279\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JDsGoogleReader<\/p><\/div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_2817\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 285px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/jddbloglines.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2817 \" title=\"JDsBloglines\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/jddbloglines.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">JDsBloglines<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, there are similarities and differences. I know Bloglines lets you organize your feeds into folders and I have not yet done that, as are my feeds in Google Reader.\u00a0 I have found that reading blogs, whether they are personal or organizational, i.e., official, to be\u00a0 an excellent way of learning what other people are doing and learn from their experiences.\u00a0 Whatever reader you select, you will find many tricks for maximizing your efficiency.\u00a0 I also use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/websearch\/bin\/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=20324\" target=\"_self\">iGoogle <\/a>as my home page and since I can access that page from any computer, anywhere,\u00a0 I have what I need at\u00a0 my fingertips.\u00a0 This is especially useful when I am away on vacation or at conferences and need quick one-stop access to my email and other utilities, favorite blog feeds and more.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect many readers will have suggestions that are better than mine!
