{"id":3483,"date":"2011-05-02T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=3483"},"modified":"2011-04-27T17:26:12","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T00:26:12","slug":"best-bytes-instapaper-and-kindle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/?p=3483","title":{"rendered":"Best Bytes: Using Instapaper with the Kindle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><del><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Picture2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3485\" title=\"Picture2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mlgsca.mlanet.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Picture2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a><\/del> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Submitted by Nancy Stimson, University of California San Diego<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kindle owners are a loyal bunch who often prefer reading everything they can on the Kindle.\u00a0 Those of you who are Kindlephiles may be glad to learn that in addition to books, magazines and newspapers, you can also read saved web content on the Kindle.<\/p>\n<p>A tool called Instapaper allows you to save web content (e.g., lengthy news articles, blog entries, or other web text) and read it later at your leisure &#8211; whether or not you have wireless access (e.g., on the bus, in a hammock, poolside).\u00a0 You can even save long email messages.\u00a0 PDFs, however, can be saved to Instapaper but can not be read on the Kindle.\u00a0 Instapaper is available on a variety of devices (e.g., computer, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Kindle).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There are three steps to using Instapaper with the Kindle:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0 Register for a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instapaper.com\"> free Instapaper account on the web<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0 There is no charge for creating an Instapaper account and there are free as well as paid iPhone and iPad Instapaper apps (the paid versions do not offer any additional features but help cover the costs required for Marco Arment, Instapaper\u2019s founder, to keep it going).<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0 Send web content to Instapaper.\u00a0 Add the Instapaper bookmarklet to your bookmarks bar.\u00a0 Then whenever you are viewing something on the web that you want to read later, click on the \u201cRead Later\u201d bookmarklet and you will receive a jaunty message that says \u201cSaved!\u201d\u00a0 This indicates that that item has been sent to your Instapaper account.\u00a0 Every Instapaper account also comes with a special email address so that you can email links or long email messages to Instapaper.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0 Set your Kindle and Instapaper settings according to the instructions listed on the Instapaper website.\u00a0 To get to these instructions, log into your Instapaper account, click on \u201cExtras\u201d along the top menu, go to the Kindle section and click on \u201cset up wireless delivery.\u201d\u00a0 You can set it up so that after you add a certain number of new items to your Instapaper account, that material will be automatically transferred to your Kindle, every day or every week, as you choose.
