CLOSER CONNECTIONS: HOW ONE MEDICAL LIBRARIAN BECAME INVOLVED IN EMR ACTIVITIES
By: Nadine Ellero, Intellectual Access Librarian, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia.

Following Dr. Frey’s closing after the important role health sciences librarians have played–and will play–in developing EMRs and point of care resources, Ms. Ellero described her professional journey in this arena.  Beginning 15 years ago, she utilized her deep interest in controlled vocabularies as a contributor to early efforts at the University of Virginia to develop precursors to a more full-blown EMR.  Ellero noted that her library director, Linda Watson, helped facilitate this connection; and she pointed out that all directors are in the important position of being able to broker connections between disparate parts of the institution.

Ellero described national efforts to improve standardization between medical record systems, and pointed out that there is not yet a national coding system for classifying medical conditions.  There are many standards, but no system.  Work continues apace towards the goal of improving interoperability between health record system, with the goal of everyone in the US having access to a personal health record by 2014.  At the University of Virginia, an exciting project to link MedlinePlus information to the personal health records of Virginia patients is in progress.

That is a daunting date, and many people in the room were skeptical that this goal could be achieved by then.  However, Ellero reminded us that all librarians have a role to play in organizing and making searchable national-level medical record systems.  We can do this at the local, regional, or even national level.  She encouraged us all to do a personal inventory of strengths, weaknesses, and interests; and to conduct environmental scans of the EMR landspace.  Ellero’s presentation was an inspiring affirmation of the many disparate and important roles that health sciences librarians can play.
