MLGSCA Spring CE: Register by April 16!

The MLGSCA Spring Continuing Education (CE) course, Library without Walls: Creating Web Portals for Online Services and Resources, is on Friday, April 23 from 10-12pm.  Register by Friday, April 16!

The class instructor is Nital Sheridan, MLIS, AHIP, the Manager of the Ochsner Medical Library & Archives in New Orleans.  She is also the author of Little White Lies: A Novel of Suspense.

The “Library Without Walls” course is designed to guide students through the process of developing a web portal for online services and resources. The goal of the class is to show medical libraries how to bring their collection from within the traditional physical library walls to users’ desktops in this age of digital and online information.

Topics discussed will be: Basic overview of web portals; how web portals are used in the medical library; evaluating collection needs of a web portal; design and technical issues of creating a web portal; marketing and Training of newly created web portal; lessons learned web portal planning (class activity).

By the end of the class, students will: 1. Understand what web portals are and why they are necessary. 2. Know how to plan, design and implement a web portal. 3. Know how to market, train and evaluate web portals.

CE Course Locations:

  1. Individuals via MegaMeeting, MLA-hosted Internet Video/Web meeting system. You will be able to participate at member or non-member fee as long as you have a computer, phone, and Internet connection. URL will be sent after registration which will close on April 16th.
  2. Host sites via MegaMeeting. All participants at a host site will be charged at member or non-member fee. The advantage to a host site will be the personal connection with other members and lack of distractions; the disadvantage is the traveling to the host site. Lunch will be provided.

Host sites:

  1. Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, CA
  2. Loma Linda University Library, CA
  3. Banner Desert Medical Center, Mesa, AZ.
  4. Arizona Health Sciences Library, Tucson, AZ

Directions concerning host sites will be provided after registration.

This CE costs $50.00 for non-members and $25 for MLGSCA & NCNMLG members.  Members will receive 2 MLA CE contact hours.  Free CE/Program Coupon allowed.

MLGSCA Spring Business Meeting will take place at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center following the CE course on April 23 from 12:30-2pm.

You do not have to register for the CE course to attend the Business meeting.  There is no charge to participate at the business meeting which can be done individually (at desktop) via MegaMeeting (link will be provided) or at one of the host sites via MegaMeeting.
