The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an energetic, innovative, service-oriented individual for an Information Specialist position in the Education and Research Services section. The Norris Medical Library is an academic research library serving the Schools and Departments of Medicine, Pharmacy, Occupational and Physical Therapy. The library has a strong emphasis on providing access to a wide variety of electronic information resources, and educating faculty, students, and staff through seminars on Internet resources, presentation software, database searching, evidence-based health care, personal digital assistants, and bibliographic management. The library contains 176,000 volumes and receives 500 current print journals and 2,568 current electronic journals. Users include medical, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students, graduate students in the biomedical and biological sciences, 1,260 full-time faculty, and a large number of other health professionals. Responsibilities include:
- Provide reference service in-person and online, and individual or group consultations by appointment.
- Participate in an extensive program for user education, serving as leader of the library’s pharmacy teaching team. Responsibilities include interfacing and collaborating with School of Pharmacy faculty to develop curriculum-based course content, assignments, tests and other materials on pharmacy resources, databases searching, and evidence-based practice.
- Serve as liaison to the School of Pharmacy, including participation on curriculum, policy and other committees, communicating with faculty to shape the library’s pharmacy and drug resources, and identifying projects for collaboration between the School and Library.
- Responsible for maintaining Library’s Pharmacy student portals and Pharmacy LibGuides.
- Take part in special projects, e.g., the development of web tutorials and educational modules to expand our educational program of on-demand instruction.
Qualifications:
- MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school
- Science degree or healthcare background preferred
- Strong oral and written communication and computer skills, excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience with web 2.0 technologies
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and meet assigned deadlines
- Demonstrated creativity and initiative
Salary/Status: Starting salary depends on qualifications and experience, minimum starting salary is $50,000. This position is in a continuing-appointment track, the USC Libraries equivalent to tenure.
