july-09-paula-romeyn9Paula Romeyn, MLIS, lost her fight with liver cancer on July 1. Paula graduated from SJSU at CSJF with her MLIS in December 2005. During her graduate studies she interned and volunteered time at Cedars Sinai, Kaiser Drug Information Services, and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMMC). Paula was destined to become a hospital librarian. Upon graduation, Paula was hired by LBMMC as the medical librarian and worked with Judy Kraemer to establish an online library for the hospital by integrating an ILS, Link Resolver, and Federated Search Engine. Her efforts paid off with the library use statistics rising significantly including a 700% increase in use of print books and 1051% increase in use of online books.

Another of Paula’s accomplishments was taking part in the development of a very successful Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship Program which led to many practice changing and cost saving research projects by bedside nurses. Paula’s 3.5 years service to LBMMC made a major impact on quality patient care and safety. In addition, upon graduation, Paula jumped right in and became an active member of the MLGSCA Advisory Council by serving as Secretary from 2006-07 and on various MLGSCA committees including, Membership, Professional Issues, Government Relations and Bylaws, and 2009 Technology Symposium. She became a good friend to everyone who had the pleasure of working with her.

Memorial services were held in honor of Paula on Saturday, July 11 and were attended my many of her MLGSCA colleagues. In lieu of flowers, her family would love us to make donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/paularomeyn) from which Paula benefited throughout her life. The MLGSCA AC voted to donate $100 on behalf of MLGSCA to the MS Society in honor of Paula’s significant service to MLGSCA.
