Call for proposals: Pacific Northwest Chapter meeting, September 2013

Posted on February 7, 2013 by Amy Chatfield | No Comments

PNC/MLA will be meeting in Anchorage, Alaska in September.  CE will be over the weekend, Sept. 14 & 15th.  The meeting will be Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16 & 17th.  The Residence Inn will be our hotel and room costs are $99 plus taxes for a single and $159 plus taxes for a two-bedroom suite.

Paper and poster proposals should be sent to Sally Bremner. Our theme is “Visual Stories Transform.”  We are encouraging all presenters to use images in their presentations.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Dipesh Navsaria, MPH, MS(LIS), MD.  He is and librarian and physician and the Director, Pediatric Early Literacy Projects and the Medical Director, Reach out and Read Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.  I mentioned to him that part of my goal in planning our meeting was to appeal to more than just medical librarians since librarians in Alaska have so little opportunity to attend conferences.  He replied:

“I particularly like the idea of being able to explicitly appeal to public and school librarians — that is actually more my “usual” audience.  I might suggest that if the “space” in your schedule exists, I’d be happy to speak more explicitly about early brain and child development and the connection to early literacy, which I think is very much something that public and school librarians can use when making the case for their services. ”

While we are only in the preliminary stages of building our budget, our goal is to keep registration to under $200.

September is a lovely time in Anchorage.  We are hoping attendees will make time to see a little bit of the state during their visit.  To this end, we have tentatively scheduled a ½ day trip south of town to visit a wildlife conservation center, see some of the most beautiful scenery in the area, and maybe even visit a glacier.

Questions about the meeting can be sent to Kathy Murray, Head of Alaska Medical Library, University of Alaska Anchorage.
