Sewell stipend to attend APHA

Librarians with an interest in public health, make this the year you attend the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. Stipends funded by The Grace and Harold Sewell Memorial Fund for this purpose will be awarded to at least 10 librarians in 2014. This year’s APHA meeting will take place in New Orleans, LA from November 15-19, 2014. Its theme is Healthography: How Where You Live Affects Your Health and Well-Being. MLGSCA wins MLA Chapter Project of the Year Award

MLGSCA is the winner of the 2014 Majors/MLA Chapter Project of the Year award for its execution of the ‘Substance over Style’ 2013 MLGSCA/NCNMLG Joint Meeting held at University of California, San Diego. Our chapter will be honored at the Awards Luncheon at MLA ‘14, Building Our Information Future on Monday May 19 from 12 – 1:30pm.
MLGSCA President Mary White and Tri-Chairs Robert Johnson, Danielle Linden, and Nita Mailander will accept the award.
Congratulations to MLGSCA and to everyone who helped make the joint meeting such a success!
MLGSCA Paraprofessional Scholarship Award winners

Congratulations to the winners of the MLGSCA Paraprofessional Scholarship Award!
Juan Jamie (Paraprofessional Student) expects to complete his MLIS degree in June 2016 at UCLA. He stated that “from a young age, libraries have always been a large part of my life, and as a library assistant at the (UCLA) Biomedical Library for the past 15 years, they continue to shape my beliefs in the impact and differences these institutions can make.” With his Master’s degree, he hopes to better serve the public, and provide information that improves the decision-making process within medicine. His passion is to “improve the use of information within the health sciences is driven by my desire to explore and implement better ways for the health and sciences industry to acquire, disseminate and make readily available the information needed to assist patients and consumers beyond academia”. He has a strong interest in social media (Facebook, Twitter and instant messaging) and how the library can incorporate it as a tool to connect to a new generation of customers.
Sandra Chase plans to complete her MLIS degree Dec 2015 from SJSU. She is thrilled to begin a career as a medical librarian. For the past 7 years, Sandra has worked as a pathology laboratory assistant for Sharp Healthcare and is excited at the chance to use her existing healthcare career experience in her chosen field of librarianship. Sandra said that she found her niche after reading one of her old favorite books “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (about a young girl who loves the New York Public Library and wants to be a librarian). She said “Librarians get to use their skills to help people, they sometimes get to teach people how to use the library’s many resources, and then they get to go home and have dinner with their families!” Sandra loves providing both efficient and friendly service as well as helping people. She cannot wait to begin the next chapter of career life in the library!
Job opportunity – Clinical Research Analyst (Charleston, SC)

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center has an immediate opening for a Clinical Research Analyst to use evidence-based practice (EBP) to promote optimal patient care with the ultimate goal of enhanced clinical outcomes. The position entails conducting systematic literature searches, evaluating and appraising research evidence, and synthesizing evidence into summaries and guidelines for review by multidisciplinary teams of content experts. This role facilitates the transition of evidence-based clinical decision support tools (e.g., order sets) into MUSC’s electronic medical record, and coordinates with Analytics to develop reports to assess the financial and clinical impact of projects. This position serves as an EBP mentor for advanced practice clinicians and nurses, and aids in developing EBP curriculum and instruction for MUSC clinicians and potentially clinicians at affiliated South Carolina hospitals. The Clinical Research Analyst provides consultative services on developing abstracts and publications, and participates in developing research grant proposals to expand EBP integration into practice.
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in health related field (e.g., MS, MPH, MLIS, MHA) with a minimum of three years experience in healthcare required. Clinical expertise in EBP tool development and implementation strategies, and a strong background in epidemiology/research methodology strongly preferred. Clinical background preferred.

Call for Nominations for MLA Offices

The MLA Nominating Committee is identifying potential candidates for the 2014/15 election. If you would like to recommend someone to be nominated for president or the board, or would like to be considered yourself, please send a current curriculum vitae and a paragraph outlining why the recommended person would be a good candidate to one of the members of the Nominating Committee (see below) by May 12th.
The 2014 Nominating Committee members have reviewed the job descriptions for President Elect/President/Past President and Board members, and have discussed key qualifications needed for candidates, including a person who has broad experience within MLA, significant professional achievements, a great capacity for leadership, a vision of the future of health sciences libraries, and an infectious enthusiasm for the excitement of librarianship at the present time. We also discussed the importance of diversity in selecting the slate – key issues to consider are geographic region, library or information service type, and amount of experience. The process for selecting candidates and electing the MLA president-elect and members of the MLA Board is described on pages 2–3 of the MLA Bylaws (log in to MLANET to read this document). The slate will contain at least two candidates for president-elect (president during 2016/17) and at least four candidates for the two vacant board positions (2015–2018). Job descriptions for president and board members are available on MLANET. The Nominating Committee will meet at MLA ’14 to finalize the list of potential candidates.
