Posted on | October 5, 2010 | No Comments

Submitted by Judy Kraemer, Long Beach Memorial/Miller Children’s Hospital

The Joint Commission is interested in knowing which standards its customers and stakeholders value the most, and those that they consider to be of questionable value to the delivery of quality health care. Comment on the Joint Commission standards on the Joint Commission website. There are forms for all accreditation and certification programs. Questions or comments? Carrie Mayer.

Best Bytes: NextGen Save and Read Later Tools

Posted on | October 4, 2010 | No Comments

   Submitted by Amy Chatfield, USC

Save and Read Later tools have been around for some time. You might be familiar with Delicious (formerly del.ici.ous): save bookmarks into a central site, then access your account and your bookmarks from any computer. After signing up for Digg, “dig” a web page, news story, or video online by clicking the Digg box, and it saves a link to the content in your personal Digg account. All Digg user votes are counted to push popular content to the top of the Digg main page. Facebook‘s “like” section works similarly- if you enjoy a page, video, or news story on the web, click the like button, and publicize this fact on your wall.

The newest generation of these tools have focused on improving the ways in which you may access your content. They save or transfer the content of entire webpages so you can read it when you’re not connected to the World Wide Web (referred to as “the web” throughout this entry). Some tools have started to integrate other types of content, too, permitting you to include emails, tweets, and RSS feeds. The four tools discussed below are all free and provide different types of access and levels of integration with other services. Check out these new tools and get through your reading list anywhere– on the bus, waiting in line, or even on the beach!

Is your library going green?  Are you developing any collaborations for research or funding library programs or collections?

Paper and posters may describe any research or practice of interest to the medical library community.

Here is your chance to share your findings with colleagues, hone your presentation skills, and gain institutional and peer recognition for your work.

We want to hear your innovative ideas! Whether you are a seasoned presenter or a novice, we strongly encourage you to consider this opportunity.

Presenters should be prepared to speak between 12-15 minutes.

News: Funding to assist critical access and rural hospitals

Posted on | September 14, 2010 | No Comments

Submitted by Mary E. White, MLA Government Relations Committee

Today (Sep 14th) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced nearly $20 million in new technical support assistance to help critical access and rural hospital facilities convert from paper-based medical records to certified electronic health record (EHR) technology.

This funding is being awarded to 46 Regional Extension Centers (RECs) in 41 states and the nationwide Indian Country. The program is intended to provide additional support for staffing and expertise to assist critical access and rural hospitals with fewer than 50 beds in selecting and implementing EHR systems primarily within the outpatient setting. A total of 1,655 critical access and rural hospitals stand to benefit from this special assistance. By converting to certified EHR technology, these facilities can qualify for substantial additional incentive payments from Medicare or Medicaid.

For more information about the new funding to support critical access and rural hospitals, visit http://healthit.hhs.gov/RuralHealth. For information about RECs, visit http://healthit.hhs.gov/extensionprogram. Follow us on Twitter @ ONC_HealthIT.

News: Saving a pinky with PubMed

Posted on | September 14, 2010 | No Comments

Submitted by Mary E. White, MLA Government Relations Committee

When the slam of a door chopped off the tip of her pinky, doctors told Deepa Kulkarni nothing could be done. She did her own research and proved them wrong. This CNN article is an excellent example of the power of information to further health care. It describes how a patient’s persistence and PubMed research paid off.  It also provides a good storyline and reference for legislators when discussing the importance of funding for NLM and the NIH public access policy.
