MLGSCA Awards Committee is proud to be able to support four scholarship awards to our up-and-coming medical librarians during their journey thru library school. This year we added a new scholarship for paraprofessionals!  The winner of the new MLGSCA Scholarship for Paraprofessionals in Health Sciences Libraries is Sondhaya “Sunny” Sritongsook.  The winners of the MLGSCA Student Scholarship awards are Meredith Bloom, Stephen Kiyoi and Heather R. MacDonald.

sunnySondhaya “Sunny” Sritongsook is our first recipient of the “MLGSCA Scholarship for Paraprofessionals in Health Sciences Libraries”.  She is currently enrolled at San Jose State University and hopes to graduate May 2011.  She works in San Diego for Scripps Mercy Hospital Medical Library as a Library Technician.  At work she contributes to helping fellow citizens, takes comfort in knowing that she’s made someone’s life a little bit easier,  and uplifted by the idea that the services she provides is promoting better health for someone.  She stated that this field unites her passion for the health sciences, is a nurturing environment for life long learning, and has a great dedication to public service. One of her reference letters stated “Sunny represents the future of our profession…a technically-skilled, service-oriented individual with energy, enthusiasm and a solid work ethic”.  She is motivated to make her own contribution to the medical library profession and has joined CLA, ALA, SERRA, and student member of MLGSCA.

Meredith Bloom currently attends UCLA and anticipates receiving her degree in 2011.  Meredith’s interest in health extends back to hermereundergraduate days when her Women’s studies major focused on women’s health and Dance. Her interest in dance and fitness caused her to focus her science background on anatomy, physiology and kinesiology and eventually become a Pilates instructor and Certified Personal Trainer.  Her deep commitment to helping individuals dates back years and is evidenced by a long list of volunteer positions.  She plans on continuing her service to the health of the community by focusing her librarianship skills on Consumer Health information services and health literacy.  Meredith will be a wonderful addition to our profession.

stephen2Stephen Kiyoi, 2009-2010 recipient of the MLGSCA student scholarship award, is currently enrolled in the UCLA Department of Information Studies and will graduate with his MLIS degree in June 2010.  Stephen earned a BA degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and hopes to become a clinical librarian at an academic library with ties to a university medical center.  Through his classes, his student position at UCLA and his internship at Norris Medical Library at USC, Stephen has become convinced of clinicians need of medical librarians to access and utilize the wealth of current biomedical literature.  Stephen is a student member of MLGSCA.

Heather R. MacDonald is a student at San Jose State University and a graduate of McGill University with a Masters of Biology and a Bachelor of Biochemistry (with Honors).   Sheheathercurrently is a resident of Ottawa, Ontario, and has worked as a molecular biologist and research technician at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Alberta. At SJSU she has a 3.957 GPA and plans to use the award during the summer of 2010 when she will graduate in August.  She completed a library internship at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where she designed and implemented a cultural competence learning guide for health professionals.  She plans a second internship at the Health Sciences Library at the University of Ottawa. She excels at and enjoys research and working with others to improve their research skills.  One of her letters of support read, “Her extensive experience in research will provide her with a rather unique perspective as a medical librarian.” Heather has several publications already and we look forward to hearing more from this up and coming librarian!

I want to congratulate all the other recipients of this year’s MLGSCA student scholarships. You’ve obviously shown great promise as future medical librarians. I hope to meet and/or work with some of you in the near future.

Best of luck for the rest of the year!
