MLGSCA’s new President-Elect is Kathleen Carlson. Kathleen is the Education/Associate Librarian at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Her vision is that “MLGSCA will continue to assist librarians, information professionals and others understand that our organization promotes excellence in professional achievement, leadership and enhances the quality of health care, education, and research and dedicated to the support of health sciences research, and patient care.”

Kathleen CarlsonBio: Kathleen Carlson is the Education/Associate Librarian at the University of Arizona College of Medicine (UACoM) Phoenix. She has completed her second year in this newly created position and is already working with the first and second year medical students as well as the clinical faculty. She is involved with assisting MSIs and MSIIs in their research on their four-year Scholarly Project. She has also given instruction in research databases, mobile technology as well as RefWorks, the bibliographic management system and created subject guides (LibGuides) for use in Outreach Clinics. The new Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) is home to the Phoenix Biomedical Campus Library-Phoenix and opened in July 2013. The 13700 square feet library is located on the third and fourth floors. Currently the Phoenix Biomedical Campus is home to 200 medical students, 50 public health students, and 20 nursing students. The 2012 fall semester began the collaboration between Northern Arizona University (located in Flagstaff, AZ) and their doctoral programs in Physical Therapy (PT) and Physician Assistant (PA) students. Prior to the UACoM Phoenix position, Kathleen was the Health Sciences Librarian at Arizona State University, downtown Phoenix campus for five years and worked as a hospital librarian at John C. Lincoln Hospital-North Mountain also in Phoenix. Her activities with MLGSCA include: Primary MLGSCA Exhibitor – Arizona Library Association Annual Conference (AZLA), 2013, Joint Meeting (San Diego) MLGSCA and Northern California Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG) – Continuing Education Co-Chair, 2012/2013, MLA Chapter Representative Alternate, 2012 /2014, Joint Meeting (Glendale, AZ) MLGSCA and Northern California Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG) – Exhibits Co-Chair, 2009 /2010, Blog Chair, 2010, Newsletter Co-Chair, 2009, Joint Meeting (Las Vegas) MLGSCA and NCNMLG – Poster Co-Chair, 2007/2008, MLGSCA Advisory Committee, 2007/2014, and MLGSCA – Interlibrary Loan Coupon Manager, 2006/2008.

Statement of Aims: I am willing to run for MLGSCA President because I have been nurtured by this organization. And with the help of its dedicated members MLGSCA will continue to assist librarians, information professionals and others understand that our organization promotes excellence in professional achievement, leadership and enhances the quality of health care, education, and research and dedicated to the support of health sciences research, and patient care. MLGSCA is one of the 13 MLA chapters that make up the larger parent organization. MLGSCA can only be valuable if its members continue to volunteer their time and expertise and contribute to the organization’s success. I understand that most MLGSCA members have positions in hospitals, universities and colleges that are their primary focus but I challenge MLGSCA’s silent majority to volunteer as chair persons, work on committees, and workgroups to continue to make MLGSCA a strong chapter.

Job opportunity – Part-time Library Technician (Hawthorne, CA)

Overview
Casa Loma College seeks a Library Technician for its Hawthorne Campus. The Library Technician shall perform daily library operations, assist in the usage of library resources and library equipment, and provide basic technical support. He or she will also assist in maintaining statistics reflecting library activities, preparing and submitting reports, and performing collection management and cataloging, as needed. This is a part-time, 24 hour per week position.

The Library Technician must:
* Demonstrate professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation
* Be well-organized with the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
* Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
* Interface effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization
* Be knowledgeable in modern office methods, procedures, practices, and equipment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
* Properly use English grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

Experience
One to two years of experience working in a library (academic library preferred), including customer service.
Experience providing basic technical hardware and software assistance (preferred)

Educational Requirements
A.A. in Library Technology, or equivalent

MLA’s Rising Star Program

Applications are now being accepted for MLA’s Rising Star Program!

The MLA Rising Star program has been developed for MLA members who are interested in attaining leadership roles in MLA but who have not yet become active at a national level. The one-year leadership development program matches each Rising Star with a mentor in a curriculum that includes:
• learning how MLA succeeds through the volunteer efforts of its members;
• the roles of the MLA Board and staff; and
• project management skills applied to an actual MLA project.

The Hospital Libraries Section/MLA Professional Development Grants Facilitate Lifelong Learning Opportunities

Are you working on research or an educational activity? The HLS/MLA Professional Development Grants award encourages continuing education opportunities allowing members to learn new skills or develop specializations and/or expanding the role of the medical librarian. The Hospital Libraries Section and MLA want to support you! The Professional Development Grants, sponsored by the Hospital Libraries Section and MLA, provide librarians working in hospital and similar clinical settings with the support needed for educational or research activities. This award was established in 1996, and up to two awards may be granted each year in the amount of $800 per award. It is preferred that applicants be a member of the Hospital Libraries Section/MLA. The application deadline is December 1.

Chapter Council Presents Sharing Round Tables

Every year the Medical Library Association Chapter Council plans an event at the MLA annual meeting that facilitates communication and sharing among the chapters of MLA. The purpose of the event is to foster information exchange on chapter-related topics, as well as on subjects of general professional concern. The event is called Chapter Council Presents Sharing Roundtables.

The 2014 Chapter Council Presents Sharing Roundtables Committee needs your help to ensure that the topics for the 2014 event are useful and interesting.
