Did you give or receive an iPad or Kindle as a holiday gift in December? If so, you’re in good company. Ownership of tablet computers and e-book readers almost doubled during last winter’s gift-giving season–from 10% to 19% of American adults. So this year’s Handheld Librarian conference was especially timely as we strive to provide even more services to library users on the go and on smaller screens. Lisa Marks hosted a remote broadcast at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where six attendees arrived early to share an educational and networking experience.
The conference featured an impressive group of information professionals and trend spotters who introduced an array of mobile applications and devices. The favored tablet overall seemed to be the iPad with Android running close behind. Librarians from Wayne State University shared their experience with roving reference using iPads. Read more

MLA 2013 abstract submission site now available!
Posted on | January 11, 2012 | No Comments
Mark your calendars not only for the 2012 MLA Annual Meeting in Seattle but also for the special international meeting in Boston in 2013. Start thinking of 2013 paper and poster submission ideas now and submit whenever you’re ready – the MLA paper and poster submission site opened on November 30, 2011 and will remain open until May 1, 2012.
MLA ’13, will take place on May 3–8, 2013, in Boston, and will incorporate the 11th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML), the 7th International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists (ICAHIS), and the 6th International Clinical Librarians Conference. The Boston meeting will provide a unique opportunity to explore the global interdependency of health information at a federated international meeting. Submission of papers and posters began earlier than usual because of the lead times needed for international participants. 2013 contributed papers and posters submission deadline is May 1, 2012. Final findings and results may be added to the accepted papers and posters up to February 1, 2013, so you don’t have to have completed research to submit a paper or abstract.
The 2013 meeting theme is “One World: Information in an Interdependent World,” which emphasizes global interdependencies in all health-related areas. “One Health” is meant to encompass not only human and animal health, but also public health, environmental health, climate change, food safety and production, and international health policy.
For access to the online submission process, instructions, and a list of section program themes, see www.mlanet.org/am/am2013/.

Contributed by Meredith Bloom, MLIS, student in the University of Pittsburgh’s HealthCAS program
I am a student in the Certificate of Advanced Study program in Health Sciences Librarianship at the University of Pittsburgh, also known as the HealthCAS program. Perhaps some of you have heard of this program but didn’t know exactly what it was. This program, now in its second year, is meant for professionals who hold MLIS degrees and wish to further specialize in health sciences librarianship. There are 11 people in my cohort from all parts of the U.S. Most of my classmates work in medical libraries, but a few are recent MLIS graduates who want to embark on a career in this exciting field. The faculty and staff are all librarians in the University of Pittsburgh’s Health Sciences Library System.
The program is one year long and is divided up into three courses: Libraries in Healthcare Environments, which provides a theoretical foundation for the rest of the program, Collections and Resources in Healthcare Environments, and Reference Services and Instruction in Healthcare Environments. Posters will be presented virtually as the Symposium will be a full day. You do not need to attend the Symposium in order to present a poster.
We strongly encourage you to share your efforts with colleagues and gain peer recognition for your work. The virtual poster session is perfect for presenting a small, completed project or the early stages of a larger project.
What Topics or Themes Will Be Considered?
Preference will be given to submissions that describe ways that directly impact the advancement of librarians in practical and innovative ways. Posters may highlight any aspect of libraries or librarianship relating to evidence-based practice. Some possible themes include:
- The role of librarians/libraries in supporting evidence-based practice.
- The role of librarians in designing, providing, and assessing instruction on evidence-based practice for health care students and/or professionals.
- The role of librarians in study design and research, such as participating in literature reviews for systematic reviews or other publications, or other tasks involving information use.
- The role of librarians/libraries in obtaining Magnet status.
- The role of librarians in aiding clinicians, departments, or groups to integrate research results into practice.
- Integration of evidence-based practice and research into an electronic medical record.
- Other topics relating to evidence-based practice.
How do Virtual Posters Work?
The posters will be displayed on large wall screens at the symposium during registration and breaks. After the symposium the posters will be online on the MLGSCA Link blog. Authors will be asked to respond to blog comments on their poster for the three weeks following the symposium.
Authors will create their poster on one PowerPoint slide. The Committee will provide instructions on poster creation and technical assistance with using PowerPoint to create a poster for all accepted authors.
All submissions will be blinded and reviewed. We will accept submissions which have been presented elsewhere, if the authors have retained the rights to display the poster in other venues.
How to Submit
Submit an abstract of no more than 300 words describing the poster by 5 PM on January 16th, 2012. Please list all presenters and institutional affiliations. You will be notified of acceptance on January 31st, 2012.
