Gaining Leadership Skills without Formally Supervising People by Natalie Reed from Midwestern University.
This class will help each participant to identify leadership skills she/he wants to develop, and then identify non-supervisory leadership opportunities that currently exist for them in their own circles of influence.
People without supervisory experience often wonder how to get leadership experience to qualify for a future management role and thus enhance their career development opportunities. In response to the growing need to develop library leaders to replace retiring babyboomers, a task force of the Leadership and Management Section of MLA has identified experience and qualification expectations that current upper library managers hold.

Genetic variant that stunts growth may have health benefits, researchers suggest

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 16 (HealthDay News) — A genetic mutation that causes a type of dwarfism may also protect against cancer and diabetes, a new study finds.
The finding suggests it may be possible to use drugs or other methods to achieve similar protection in normal-height adults, said study authors Valter Longo, a University of Southern California cell biologist, and Ecuadorian endocrinologist Jaime Guevara-Aguirre.
Their research included people in a remote community on the slopes of the Andes mountains. Many members of the community have Laron syndrome, a deficiency in a gene that prevents that body from using growth hormone.

Best Bytes: SAP 2.0 PowerPoint Tools Using Twitter !

Want to make your PowerPoint presentations more dynamic and interactive? A few weeks ago I saw a demonstration of a tool that allows audience members, students, or session participants to post messages to an interactive slide during a PowerPoint presentation. It’s SAP 2.0 PowerPoint Tools and it allows for clicker-like interactivity, but without the expense of clickers. So an instructor can pose a question and ask students in a lecture to respond on the screen.
I have tried it out. I cut-and-pasted the interactive slide from the link given above. The link includes slide templates that one can copy and paste into a PowerPoint. It really works! Of course, students need a twitter account, and there’s no guarantee what they might say on screen.
