The Graff Library at City of Hope is recruiting for a clinical librarian to support evidence-based practice and effective clinical decision-making. City of Hope is a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases; it includes a clinical research hospital, basic science research institute, and graduate school offering PhDs in the biological sciences. This position would be a good fit for someone with experience in either a hospital or academic health sciences library.
Please visit the City of Hope website for more information about the position and City of Hope, including application instructions. If you have questions about the position or the library, please contact me. Also, I will be attending MLA and would be glad to meet informally with potential candidates at the conference.

Best Bytes: Using Instapaper with the Kindle

Submitted by Nancy Stimson, University of California San Diego
Kindle owners are a loyal bunch who often prefer reading everything they can on the Kindle. Those of you who are Kindlephiles may be glad to learn that in addition to books, magazines and newspapers, you can also read saved web content on the Kindle.
A tool called Instapaper allows you to save web content (e.g., lengthy news articles, blog entries, or other web text) and read it later at your leisure – whether or not you have wireless access (e.g., on the bus, in a hammock, poolside). You can even save long email messages. PDFs, however, can be saved to Instapaper but can not be read on the Kindle. Instapaper is available on a variety of devices (e.g., computer, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Kindle).

MedlinePlus makes appearance at AZ Science and Engineering Fair
Posted on | April 22, 2011 | No Comments
On April 12th more than 1400 K-12 students from across Arizona descended on the Phoenix Convention Center for the annual Arizona Science and Engineering Fair.
Yamila El-Khayat, Outreach Librarian, University of Arizona Tucson and I used an iPad to show students how easy it was to search for easy to understand medical and health information using the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health Medlineplus website . We encouraged the students to use the website to help them with their future science projects and papers and to continue to use the website to find videos, cool tools, games, interaction between drugs and herbal supplements and health topics. We also let them know that Medlineplus was available in English as well as Spanish and other languages. We were also given access to the judging areas where posters and projects were on display and were able to target high school students interested in pursuing health care professions after graduation.
We hope to continue this outreach to Arizona’s students interested in the health sciences. and also made very important contacts with the Arizona Science Teachers Association a chapter of the National Science Teachers Association.

Receiving the Louise Darling MLGSCA Achievement Award this past Friday was both humbling and overwhelming! Those of you who know me know I am not often rendered speechless!!!
To be recognized by one’s peers is an honor, but the real reward is what MLGSCA has given me: personal and professional growth and satisfaction, and the opportunity to meet and work with the most fantastic group of people, many of whom have become close friends.
Thank you so much for including me in the list of such esteemed award recipients. It has truly been an honor and privilege to be part of MLGSCA.
My heartfelt thanks –
Ellen
