Dr. David Levy will speak on Friday, January 29 at 8:30am. In his speech titled “No Time to Thinkâ€, David will point out that the whole reason why we spend time streamlining, automating, and speeding up our workflow isn’t to work more – it’s to make time for important things computers can’t do, like thinking. David argues that our fast-paced world doesn’t allow for time to think deeply, the time when we come up with our best ideas and most important insights. Watch David’s talk at Google last year on the Lifehacker website.

Starting a CME Program at Your Library
Posted on | December 4, 2009 | No Comments
By Joe Pozdol, USC Norris Medical Library
At the November 20th MLGSCA Continuing Education program, “Exploiting Librarian Skills to Enhance Continuing Medical Education Programsâ€, Dr. Jerrald Roberts from the University of Utah School of Medicine spoke about setting up a CME program for clinicians. By allowing doctors to submit the searches they conduct, medical libraries can help physicians get 0.5 AMA category 1 credit per search. Up to 20 of these credits can be counted toward a Physician’s Recognition Award.
The Point of Care internet CME began in 2006 and, according to Dr. Roberts, is a form of “structured, self-directed, online learning.â€Â Dr. Roberts has created a CME template that meets necessary American Council for Continuing Medical Education criteria and is willing to share this form at no charge to interested medical libraries. In order to get credit, physicians must complete the following steps:
- Identify a clinical question based on a point of care patient need
- Choose which databases to search from a list of hyperlinks (e.g. PubMed, National Guideline Clearinghouse, ACP Pier)
- Cut and paste search URLs
- Explain how the information learned will be applied
- Submit the form for evaluation and print out a certificate upon receipt
Enhancing CME with Web 2.0 tools
Posted on | December 3, 2009 | No Comments
By Angela Murrell, The Scripps Research Institute
The November 20th MLGSCA Continuing Education program, “Exploiting Librarian Skills to Enhance Continuing Medical Education Programsâ€, was held in conjunction with the 13th Annual Conference for CME Professionals which is presented by the Southern California Medical Education Council (SCMEC). The venue was the Good Samaritan Hospital conference center, which was very nice setting with large meeting rooms and an auditorium.
The morning consisted of a joint session, which included a presentation by two MLGSCA members, Ysabel Bertolucci and Eve Melton (who are also Kaiser Permanente Medical Center Librarians) called “Leveraging Library Services for CMEâ€. Since this was a joint session with the SCMEC group, I think it was great that they were presenting some of the ways librarians are assisting with CME, especially at Kaiser. After having viewed MLA’s November 18th webcast on connecting to mobile users, I was excited to see that Web 2.0 tools were being used to enhance CME.
