Update: the deadline to receive the conference rate of $209 per night has been extended to Monday, January 4th, 12:00 midnight.
With the MLGSCA/NCNMLG 2010 Joint Meeting right around the corner, it’s almost time to engage, refocus and connect with colleagues at the beautiful Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa!
Hotel reservations must be made on or before Monday, December 21st at 12:00 midnight to receive the conference rate of $209.

Remembering Our Colleague, Christa Buswell

Christa Buswell, retired Chief of Library Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in West Los Angeles, passed away on November 16, 2009 after a brief illness.
Services in honor of Christa were held on Sunday, November 29Â at 10:30AM at St. Augustine by the Sea Episcopal Church, Santa Monica, CA. Flowers and/or donations in her name to St. Augustine’s Church are welcome as is any form of love in her honor and memory.
Christa began her library career as a library assistant at the Free Public Library in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1956. During her library career, Christa worked at the University of Southern California (1957-1959), VA Brentwood (1957-1965), VA San Diego (1965-1976), and VA Wadsworth-West Los Angeles Medical Center (1976-1996). Christa, who earned her MLS degree from UCLA in 1969, was active in many professional organizations during her career, including the American Library Association, the Medical Library Association, the Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona, the Society of Public Health Education, the Advisory Council of the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Consumer Health Information Cooperative, the California Library Services Board, and the Metro-Med Cooperative Library System.
Paraprofessional Students in Health Sciences Libraries

How Will You Cut The Cord? Fall 2009 MLA Webcast

MLA broadcasted their fall education webcast, “Cut The Cord: Connecting to our Mobile Users,” on November 18th. There were several site viewings in Southern California and Arizona available to MLGSCA members.
The webcast provided excellent case studies of uses of mobile technologies in both medical libraries and health care settings, included speakers from a variety of libraries, and the bibliographies submitted by speakers and videotaped presenters provide additional resources for exploring this emerging field.
Max Anderson (Technology Coordinator, NN/LM GMR, University of Illinois-Chicago) commenced the webcast with a short history of mobile technology. Emily Hurst (Instructional Services Librarian, University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio) and Megan von Isenburg (Associate Director, Information Services, Medical Center Library, Duke University) discussed projects involving e-Readers and how they are used in clinical settings. David Rothman (Manager, Medical Library, Community General Hospital, Syracuse, NY) and Bart Ragon (Associate Director, Library Technology Services & Development, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia-Charlottesville) compared medical applications on the iTouch, iPhone and Android phones.  Bart Ragon presented four ways of searching MEDLINE from a mobile device: PubMed on Tap; MEDLINE via Unbound Medicine; Pubget Mobile; and, Mobile PubMed.Â

Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks for immediate consideration a Medical Librarian for a long-term part-time (10 hours per week/40 hours per month) position at a hospital in West Covina, CA. Responsibilities include providing reference and research assistance to the hospital staff and maintaining the library. This is a temporary position of indefinite length.
Responsibilities:
- Provide reference/research assistance to the hospital staff using print and electronic resources
- Handling inter-library loans via Docline
- Processing and categorizing of new materials received into the library
- Monitoring books, supplements and periodicals for missing issues and contact vendors for replacements
- Maintaining the book and journal collection
- Attend designated committee meetings
- Perform additional duties as needed or requested
MLA Nominating Committee Candidate: Jacqueline D. Doyle

Jacqueline D. Doyle, AHIP, FMLA, is one of 18 candidates selected by the MLA Nominating Committee to be on MLA’s Nominating Committee for the 2010/11 association year. Nine of the 18 candidates will be selected to serve on the committee.  Jacqueline is currently the Head of the Arizona Health Sciences Library at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in partnership with Arizona State University–Phoenix.

MLA Nominating Committee Candidate: Janis F. Brown

Janis F. Brown, AHIP, is one of 18 candidates selected by the MLA Nominating Committee to be on MLA’s Nominating Committee for the 2010/11 association year. Nine of the 18 candidates will be selected to serve on the committee. Janis is currently the Associate Director of Systems and Information Technology at University of Southern California’s Norris Medical Library.

MLA Board of Directors Candidate: Ellen M. Aaronson

Ellen M. Aaronson, AHIP, is one of four candidates selected by the MLA Nominating Committee to run MLA’s Board of Directors for the 2010/11 association year. Since 2004, Ellen has been the sole librarian at West Hills Hospital & Medical Center in West Hills, California. She is also Director of Research Services at Library Associates Companies in Los Angeles, California.
Ellen has been an MLA member since 1978, and her 2009 national MLA activites include being an official blogger. She is a current member of the Hospital Libraries Section. Recent chapter activities include membership in the Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona (MLGSCA), of which Ellen was a president in 2006-2007, and serving as co-chair for the MLGSCA/Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG) 2010 Joint Meeting. Rikke Ogawa, AHIP, is one of four candidates selected by the MLA Nominating Committee to run MLA’s Board of Directors for the 2010/11 association year. Since 2006, Rikke has been the Emergent Technologies Coordinator and Health and Life Sciences Librarian at UCLA’s Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library.

2010 Thomson Scientific/MLA Doctoral Fellowship

The Thomson Scientific/MLA Doctoral Fellowship provides a grant of $2,000 to support research or research-related travel in a 12 month period. It may not be used for tuition or living expenses. Applications are due December 1.
