Contact Your House Member to Support the Federal Research Public Access Act
Posted on | May 3, 2010 | No Comments
By Mary White, Chair, MLGSCA Government Relations/By-Laws Committee
Background Information:
On April 15, 2010, Representatives Mike Doyle (D-PA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Gregg Harper (R-MS), Rick Boucher (D-VA), and Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) introduced H.R. 5037, “The Federal Research Public Access Act” (FRPAA). The language in H.R. 5037 is identical to S. 1373, introduced by Senators Cornyn (R-TX) and Lieberman (I-CT) last summer.
This legislation would require federal agencies with annual extramural research portfolios over $100 million to develop public access policies relating to research conducted by employees of that agency or from funds administered by that agency. H.R. 5037 builds upon and refines the work done by the NIH [through the NIH Public Access Policy] and requires that the Federal Government’s leading underwriters of research adopt meaningful public access policies.
Federal agencies impacted by this legislation include: Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and National Science Foundation.

By Mary L. Ryan, AHIP, FMLA on behalf of MLA 2010 Nominating Committee
The MLA Nominating Committee members are ready to begin identifying potential candidates for the election, and they would appreciate receiving recommendations from MLA members. If you would like to recommend someone to be nominated for President or for the Board, or would like to be considered for one of the positions, please send his or her curriculum vitae and a paragraph outlining why the person recommended would be a good candidate to one of the members of the Nominating Committee, as listed below, by May 5th.
The process for selecting candidates and electing the MLA President Elect and members of the Board for 2011/12-2013/14 is described on pages 2-3 of the MLA Bylaws. The 2010 Nominating Committee members, who were elected by the membership late last year, have reviewed the job descriptions for President Elect/President/Past President and Board members, and are currently discussing attributes needed for candidates, including knowledge and experience in association activities, ability to envision what needs to be done and to implement plans to accomplish both short and long-term goals, good oral and written communication skills, etc. They have also discussed the importance of diversity in selecting the slate – age, personalities, geographic region, interests, gender, and library type.

The good news is: the Library Manager position is being changed from a part-time to a full time position. Please visit Burlew Medical Library for a link to the job posting and resume instructions.
To all my colleagues in MLGSCA, you have all been a tremendous source of support, inspiration and knowledge. I am indeed proud to be a medical librarian and have enjoyed my journey tremendously. My husband and I look forward to much more travel, family time, ballroom dancing, reading (of course) and volunteer efforts centered around the National Bone Marrow Courier program and literacy training.
We look forward to your job applications. Ideally, we would like to have the new Manager hired in June 2010 so that I can participate in a month’s worth of training and orientation.
